After attending Highland High School, he attended Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, on a baseball scholarship, where he graduated with a double major in accounting and information systems.
He subsequently achieved his certified public accountant license in 1991.
With a keen sense for numbers and computers, he worked in the private sector of accounting for several years, where he gained experience in the accounting field.
His passion for expanding his experience led him to the commercial insurance industry, where he was controller for several years.
